Character Development & Representation - Component 1

For my component 1 film opening, I thought about the details of my two main characters and chose to develop them. This allows me to create a clearer idea of who the characters are. This also adds depth to them, which therefore helps the actors execute very realistic performances of their characters.

THE MAN

A very lonely and delusional man who will do anything for some form of a relationship, including murder.

He is represented as dangerous - always has red on his clothes (blood, red clothes) except for his dream because him in his dream represents his prime, ideal self; someone who can get a relationship. The red connotes danger due to its association with blood. There are also many low angle shots of him which emphasise his power that he misuses to kill The Girl. The many lowkey lighting shots of him in the film reinforce his mystery, therefore further emphasising this power.

He is represented as lonely - many of the shots that he is in only has him in the frame, except for the dream sequence (where he imagines him not being alone) and when he dances with The Girl's corpse.

The Joker in Joker (2019), played by Joaquin Phoenix, is a character with many traits similar to The Man, such as: lonely, killer (and thinks that the murder was not immoral, rather necessary), someone who hallucinates a lot, and more.

THE GIRL 

A naive and innocent extroverted woman who is always looking for the good in people.

She is represented as naive - She is smiling in every shot that she is in. Also, her character is introduced in a small and dark alley, which is an isolated location that can be unsafe, however; she is unaware of how dangerous the alley may be.

Brenda Strong in Catch Me If You Can (2002), played by Amy Adams, is a character with many traits similar to The Girl, such as: naive, innocent, unaware, and more.
